While I prefer The Ritz for its luxurious comfort, my colleague prefers staying at Raffles The Plaza. Located close to the Chijmes and War Memorial Park, Raffles The Plaza is affiliated with the renowned Raffles Hotel, which is where Singapore Sling was first invented. I think one of Raffles The Plaza's strongest selling point is its interconnecting shopping mall with its sister hotel, Swisshotel The Stamford. One has very easy access to a wide variety of shops within the complex, not to mention restaurants. If you get bored of the selection, you could always venture out using the MRT station located within the complex.
Make sure you get a room in the revamped wing when checking in - while the rooms in the old wing are of a similar size, the decor is tired and unattractive. The thing I like about Raffles The Plaza is that one can control all the lights and curtains in the room, plus the temperature, via the bedside panel, saving the need to get out of bed to do it late at night (total lazy bum, I agree).
Not exactly luxurious, I'd say the rooms have a modern comforl feel to it, with the wooden color furniture and beige and grey color combination.
I adore the rainshower facility in the bathroom, which has a calming effect on me. The sink looks impressive but is extremely un-user friendly. If you turn the knob too quickly, water would come gushing out of the tap into the bowl and splash right out into the surrounding, like a fountain effect, creating a mess everywhere. Am sure the cleaners must be annoyed walking into every room each day trying to clean up the sink!
Raffles the Plaza has an AMAZING spa, RafflesAmrita Spa, which offers all kind of therapies, including Ayurvedic treatments, which I was very into once. RafflesAmrita Spa purports to be the biggest spa and fitness facility in Asia, and only members and residents of the two connecting hotels have the privilege of using the facilities. I enjoyed my treatments there very much, and was pleasantly surprised to find that the hotel is now providing toiletires from the RafflesAmrita Spa in the bathrooms.
Not sure if this were available in all the rooms, as I was supposedly upgraded to the Executive Floor (although I saw no differences to the ones that I normally stayed in), but the coffee machine was a new discovery for me. Also appreciated the thoughtful touch of providing inhouse tea blends for morning, afternoon, and evening.
Views from my room - to my right, there is the busy business district and the durian (esplanade), and to my left, the Suntec City area.
Was too lazy to walk down for breakfast, so ordered in the other day - the in-room breakfast selection was much better than the Ritz- the sliced banana for my morning cereal was cute! Of the restaurant choices, Inagiku is good for its fresh and authenic Japanese selection (need reservation esp for lunch), and Kopi Tiam is nice for an upscale hawker center (although must admit I'd rather go for the real thing), and Stamford Cafe is where the normal breakfast is served. Jaan in Swisshotel is also good for bringing tourists, as it is located on the 70th floor with a panaromic nightview of the city, although food wise, there are better choices elsewhere. Alternatively, you can always drop by New Asia Bar, which I heard these days is popular with the tourists (who else) and the hip hop crowd (due to the music choice), think its popularity has declined dramatically in recent years though.
